SINGAPORE—Korean Air selected Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100G geared turbofan (GTF) to power up to 50 Airbus A321neo aircraft in a key regional win for the engine maker.
The A321neos are part of a broader fleet renewal program by Korean which expects to receive the first of the PW1100-powered twinjets in July. The airline also has Boeing 787s and 737 MAXs on order, the time line for the delivery of which remains unknown. The A321neos and 737 MAX deliveries were originally expected to begin in 2019, but both types have been significantly delayed. The airline has 30 of each on firm order, plus options.
Korean and Pratt are also discussing terms for the airline’s Maintenance and Engineering Division to join Pratt’s PW1100G GTF MRO network. “Joining the GTF MRO network is a significant milestone that will allow Korean Air to enhance its MRO capability,” Korean Air EVP and COO Soo-Keun Lee said.
