In a hint of cosmological discoveries to come, the European Space Agency’s Euclid telescope captured a smattering of sharp, wide-field views of galaxies near and far, including a single-shot of the famed Horsehead Nebula that took only 1 hr. to render. Euclid was launched July 1 on a six-year mission to map billions of galaxies—one-third of the sky—located as far away as 10 billion light-years from Earth. The goal of the mission is to uncover the gravitational influences of dark matter and dark energy, which compose 95% of the known universe. Here is a look at Euclid’s first color images. Routine science operations are scheduled to begin in early 2024.
