An expansion of Bulgaria Air’s fleet and route network is underway as the Eastern European carrier starts to take delivery of Airbus A220s.
Seven A220s – five A220-300s and two smaller -100s – are scheduled to arrive from lessor Air Lease Corporation by summer 2024. The first has recently been delivered to Sofia, with two more due in September and the final batch of four next June.
They will join the existing fleet of six A320s, two A319s four Embraer E190s and three Boeing 737-300s. All the A220s will come in two-class layout. Both will offer eight business class seats. The -300s will carry 135 economy-class passengers, while the -100s will accommodate 114.
They will supplement, rather than replace, the similarly sized Embraers and A319s.
The A220s will be used on scheduled services throughout the network. “It will enable us to expand our network regarding destinations and flown frequencies,” CEO Radoslav Zlatkov said. “Currently, we are doing analyses by markets and destinations and cannot give more information.”
Upgrading the fleet with the A220s is part of what Zlatkov described as “a company-wide transformation program to improve the customer experience across all our brand touchpoints.” He cited the aircraft’s improved levels of cabin space and comfort as factors behind the acquisition. On the technical front, he noted its fuel efficiency and small noise footprint than predecessors, making it suitable for airports in urban areas.
