While it may seem heretical to suggest such a counter-intuitive stance, Pierre Sparaco in his European Perpective column "The End of Oil" (AW&ST Dec. 11, 2006, p. 60) reveals the unsettling reality of how automakers and electrical utilities have leapfrogged the aviation industry in the development of alternate fuel systems.

The FAA--bolstered by industry's 21 years' experience in extended-range twin-engine operations (ETOPS) and high reliability of modern engines--issued its final ETOPS rule on Jan. 8, allowing for operations to transcend current time, aircraft-type and range constraints.
Unmanned aerial vehicles, now also being called unmanned aircraft systems, have come a long way since their introduction during World War I. Inaccurate and unreliable, these early UAVs did not impress political or military leaders of the time, and few recognized their hidden potential. Operation Desert Storm in 1991 saw the first widespread battle use of UAVs. NATO's involvement in the Balkans throughout the 1990s saw widened use of UAVs, but not until the 9/11 terrorist attacks did the news media propel these systems into the limelight.

KLM passengers at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport's E Pier now have access to 12 new self-service transfer kiosks (SSTKs) on European and intercontinental routes. The kiosks allow passengers missing a connecting flight to print a new boarding pass without having to go to a transfer desk. KLM says the kiosks will cut the number of transfer desk users by more than 80%, and 100% once all IATA-affiliated carriers adopt e-ticketing. The service will be expanded to handle seat changes.

Astronomers have more work to do, but a new map of "dark matter" dating halfway back to the Big Bang lends weight to the theory that the mysterious phenomenon holds the visible Universe like lights on a Christmas tree. The researchers have produced a three-dimensional map of a slice of the sky nine times the size of a full Moon that shows visible matter--stars, galaxies and interstellar gas--has accumulated along filaments of dark matter stretching back in time.
