Russia's plans to pull crews off the Mir space station will be high on the agenda in a scheduled meeting this week in Paris between NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin and his Russian counterpart, Yuri Koptiev. Russia now plans to bring the last Mir crew home in August, six months before the facility can be safely deorbited. That has raised concerns here about whether the aging station can be controlled without humans on board to fix failure-prone computers and other equipment (AW&ST June 7, p. 27).

Lube-for-Life is a self-lubricating, maintenance-free ball screw. It can be added to standard ball screws or incorporated into made-to-order ball screws. It reduces environmental pollution associated with oil lubrication and reduces system cost by eliminating the need for autolube systems, lube lines, hoses and pipes. While in use, the element dispenses a thin film of lubricant inside the ball nut, on the rolling elements and raceway. This provides lubrication in the load zone and maximizes machine performance.

Low-cost fare competition has prompted Japan's Ministry of Transport to increase spot safety inspections for the nation's 11 scheduled and two charter airlines. Discount fares are concentrated on Tokyo-Fukuoka and Tokyo-Sapporo routes on which two startup carriers, Skymark and Air Do, are challenging Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Japan Air System. The ministry wants to know if discount fares have led the carriers to cut corners on safety. The 2.5-week safety blitz is to end this week.
