Aviation Week & Space Technology

While airline stocks have been star performers and passengers are returning in Southeast Asia, there is still considerable caution about the long-term recovery of airlines in the region. Boeing will release a revised 20-year outlook at the Paris air show this week that is optimistic about passenger traffic. In Boeing's view, Asia will rank as the world's second-largest travel market in the next two decades, second only to the more mature North American market. But in the short-term, Boeing is not seeing a rebound.

Military propulsion technology will continue to strongly influence the advanced technologies destined for commercial engines, and in some cases--as in the past--military and commercial engines will be directly linked through a common predecessor. Some of the most notable examples of commercial engines that evolved from military powerplants are the commercial CFM56-2, which shares a common core heritage with the B-1B bomber's F101 and the JT8D, which evolved from the military J52 used on the A-6 and EA-6B aircraft.

Airline passengers' needs are simple--comfortable passage and efficient service from ground level to cruising altitude. But whether those needs are honored will depend on whether industry regards the passenger as its No. 1 priority as transport technology advances.

A blend of new and traditional trends is providing the foundation for a fresh, divergent marketplace for 21st century air transports. This market will be shaped by forces as varied as the economy, government regulation, the environment and politics. More than ever, economies in the manufacture and operation of aircraft will be paramount. New technology will play a role in new aircraft, if it serves the bottom line. Otherwise, technology will be relegated to a subordinate role in the development of new-generation aircraft.

Two U.S. companies expect their seat belts with integrated air bags to win FAA certification and to begin shipments by early 2000. Both are being offered as solutions to help airlines meet the 16g seat requirement of FAR 25.562, which affects transport aircraft certified after 1988, such as the Airbus A340 and Boeing 777. Aircraft that are subject to the 16g standard either operate under revocable waivers or lose revenue-producing seats near bulkheads.
