Finnair is reviewing its future operational strategy following a $87.7 million, or 20%, drop in pretax profits for the first half of 1998. Although revenues were up 7.5%, operating costs rose 9.4%. Chief Executive Officer Antti Potila, who retires on Dec. 31, said most of the carrier's growth has come in sectors with below average unit revenues. Faced with increased competition, as well as slowing passenger and cargo demand, Finnair may seek a strategic investor if the Finnish government moves ahead with plans to reduce its 58% stake in the airline.

A circular compressed wire mesh rope, impregnated with silicon gel, is Raychem Corp.'s new solution to electromagnetic interference shielding and electrical grounding. The multi-function dBseal is an alternative to two-piece rubber and metal mesh gaskets. It will sell for 50 cents per foot in volume applications, according to the company. The copper-nickel alloy mesh provides the shielding, while the silicon gives an environmental seal. The gel shielding's effectiveness was greater than 75 dB. over the 100 MHz.-1 GZHz. range after salt spray testing.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) has a new report on the changing structure of the large civil aircraft industry. It doesn't mince words in assessing Boeing's current woes (see p. 28). Nor does the ``Asia crisis'' loom large in the commission's principal findings. ``Boeing's post-merger performance has been characterized by lagging integration progress and production problems that have led to poor financial performance, customer dissatisfaction and debt downgrading,'' the agency says.

U.S. government restrictions on the export of encryption software and hardware are ``futile,'' says a report by the Cato Institute. The U.S. restricts the export of encryption products with key lengths of more than 56 bits. But Cato's report found that high-level encryption software can be obtained easily over the Internet or from non-U.S. producers. ``Foreign-made encryption products are as good as, or better than, U.S.-made products,'' asserts the report's author, Henry B. Wolfe, a graduate-level teacher of computer security at a New Zealand university.
