The Obama administration in May unveiled a $16 billion budget proposal for fiscal 2010 that focuses on the Next Generation (NextGen) air traffic control system and controller staffing issues. The fiscal 2010 budget sidesteps the funding issue, but only for a year. The administration expects to renew its push for dramatic changes in aviation funding beginning in 2011, the administration budget documents say.

Qantas finished deploying Mxi’s Maintenix software for its first three A380 aircraft . Its A380 Fast Track implementation is phase one of Project Marlin, which will implement Mxi’s Maintenix software across the Qantas fleet. Qantas operates more than 130 Boeing and Airbus aircraft, and it has 17 more A380s on order.

A US Airways V2500 engine set a new time on wing record, completing 30,520 flying hours on its first run. This is the third time a US Airways engine has surpassed 30,000 hours before being removed for its first scheduled overhaul, and breaks the previous IAE time on wing record, also held by a US Airways engine.

Goodrich’s Alabama Service Center received Boeing approval to provide overheat service bulletin inspections and modifications for Boeing 737NG aircraft. The service bulletin, SB1079, mandates inspection of the aircraft’s GE CFM56-7 engine thrust reverser inner walls and insulation blankets as well as checking for signs of heat damaged and correcting possible heat-related issues.

Dallas Airmotive signed a five-year engine service agreement with Avantair to repair, maintain, overhaul and provide field service on PT6A-66 engines that power the operator’s Piaggio Avanti turboprop aircraft. Dallas Airmotive has been a PT6 OEM-authorized distributor and designated overhaul facility since 1967.

Nayak Aircraft Service will offer several support options for the Sukhoi Superjet, according to Sales Manager Friedrich-Wilhelm Wilms. These will include both line maintenance and base maintenance, with structural repair in authorized service centers and technical training once the program is in operation.

CAE received FAA Inspection Authorization approval for six of its e-Learning maintenance training courses, which cover Boeing 737NG engine ground operations, advanced digital principles, human factors, maintenance diagnostic systems and reduced vertical separation minimums. It signed a technical training agreement with Canada’s Jazz Air, under which Jazz maintenance training programs will be licensed to CAE.

MUMBAI—Trouble between union and management at Indian MRO company AirWorks Engineering is said to be behind the sabotage of industrialist Anil Ambani’s Bell 412 helicopter in Mumbai. The Kafkaesque plot unfolded in April at AirWorks’ Mumbai international airport hangar, when pebbles were found in the fuel tank of the helicopter. Following this discovery, Bharat Borge, the man who spotted the pebbles in the fuel tank, was found dead on a railway track in a Mumbai suburb with a suicide note in his pocket.
