The shortage of licensed engineers remains a growing issue because many airlines have cut their apprenticeship schemes. As a result, the process of gaining an aircraft engineer license has grown quite tortuous. In the U.K. today, any would-be aircraft engineer would have to self-fund his or her way through college and then do the required modules at a recognized university. Following that, she or he would need to find a company to provide them with work experience -- so those who want a career in aircraft engineering have to be very determined.
A new microsite allows customers to build, customize and demonstrate GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies' Everest XLG3 Videoprobe, a video borescope system. The microsite can be accessed at www.xlg3.com. All XLG3 parts, features and software can be added on for a 360-degree virtual demonstration, GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies says. Using the "Build Your Own XLG3" and "Virtual Demo" features, the company says customers can configure and get a feel for a custom system.

Zirconium dioxide, also known as the zirconia of costume jewelry fame, has long been used as a ceramic coating for engine components because of its low thermal conductivity. With a protective, 250 micron-thick layer of it, metallic components can perform in the intense heat of aircraft turbine engines, which spikes at over 1,000º C during takeoff. Damage to a component's coating, however, compromises its ability to withstand intense temperatures; sand is a common culprit.

In March 2007 when Southwest Airlines (SWA) discovered it had flown aircraft that were not in compliance with an airworthiness directive, the carrier took actions to address the problem. SWA reported the error to its Certificate Management Office (CMO), which is responsible for the airline's regulatory compliance, through a voluntary disclosure program and began to take steps to address the AD. But the carrier also continued to fly the 46 Boeing 737 aircraft that were not in compliance for nine days.
