Condor, part of Thomas Cook Group Airlines, will inaugurate a twice weekly link between its home base at Frankfurt Airport and Pittsburgh International Airport from June 23, 2017, growing its long-haul. The new route will complement new flights to San Diego and New Orleans in an expanded summer 2017 schedule and will operate through to September 1, 2017, a total of 21 return rotations.
Over the past year major global airline brands such as Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines, plus local southern African operators Air Namibia and Proflight Zambia, have already inaugurated flights from Durban, South Africa. These services have delivered important regional, continental and notably key intercontinental connectivity, complementing the existing transit options with Comair (British Airways franchise) and South African Airways via Johannesburg and Emirates Airline via Dubai.
Spanish carrier Air Europa is to further extend its network into South America during the winter 2016/2017 schedule with new links into Argentina and Ecuador and Routes events and consultancy ASM (Airport Strategy and Marketing) contributed to delivering one of these new long-haul flights.
ASM’s consultancy expertise, working with the close and invaluable support from the Provincial Government of KwaZulu-Natal, has enabled Turkish Airlines, Ethiopia Airlines and Qatar Airways to grow their global networks and introduce new direct routes to Durban.
Despite the Czech Republic capital, Prague being on Birmingham Airport’s radar for many years, a scheduled meeting in Durban, South Africa in September brought contact and paved the way for the formal announcement of the regular service just five weeks later.
The return of Africa’s largest carrier to the southern city, its third destination in South Africa, can be directly linked to recent World Routes forums, and of course, the hosting of this year’s event in Durban.
The new air link will be introduced from December 18, 2015 and will be operated on a twice weekly basis using a mix of Boeing 737 and Embraer 190 equipment. The flights will operate from Kharkiv on Tuesdays and Fridays and from Kutaisi on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Numerous new flights from Vienna have already been published for the summer 2016 schedule including expanded offerings from based carrier, Austrian Airlines, as well as NIKI, SunExpress, Transavia and Vueling. The airport has also attracted the return of two seasonal operators in the form of Aegean Airlines and Europe Airpost, the latter soon to be rebranded as ASL Airlines.
