Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair has announced Gothenburg in Sweden as its 74th base from September, where it will base a single aircraft to launch additional frequencies to London Stansted.
The new base will offer a network of 13 routes which are expected to generate around 600,000 passengers annually. Although the airline did not announce any new routes with the base opening, it will increase its existing Gothenburg – London Stansted service from twice to three-times-daily from September 15, 2015.
“Sweden is a significant growth market for Ryanair and as we announce our second Swedish base at Gothenburg, we will continue to connect Sweden with Europe’s major centres of business, such as London, Milan and Paris,” Ryanair chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said.
Sweden is a significant growth market for Ryanair, and the airline has said that it will continue to connect Sweden and Europe’s major centres of business such as London, Milan and Paris.
Currently, Ryanair connects Gothenburg with Alghero, Alicante, London Stansted, Malaga, Malta, Marseille, Milan, Palma de Mallorca, Paris Beauvais, Pisa, Rome Ciampino and Zadar.
The low-cost carrier operates from a total of six airports in Sweden, which up until earlier this year included Göteborg City Airport which closed in January this year. Since late November, heavy passenger traffic at Göteborg City Airport has been redirected to Göteborg Landvetter Airport, as a result of potential deficiencies identified in the runway system.
Swedish Airport operator, Swedavia decided to acquire the remaining shares in Göteborg City to wind down the operation of commercial flights last year, and concentrate on the development of Göteborg Landvetter.
Ryanair operated more than 310,000 seats out of Göteborg City in 2005, according to data from OAG, and hit a peak in available seats in 2008, when the Irish LCC operated more than 450,000 seats from the now defunct Swedish airport. Up until last year, Ryanair was still offering more than 330,000 seats from Göteborg City, though has now transferred all operations over to Göteborg Landvetter where it has now announced its 74th base.
