He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
The Japan Civil Aviation Bureau has introduced a dedicated website for passengers to check radiation levels at Japanese airports and other operational information. The site (www.mlit.go.jp/koku/flyjapan_en) also gives insights on the operational status of the airports and domestic operations that have been severely affected by the earthquake, the tsunami and the continuing nuclear threat. The United Nations has determined that radiation levels at the airports are still well within safe limits.
Lufthansa will launch daily Airbus A380 flights from Frankfurt to Miami on June 10. The aircraft replaces Boeing 747-400s that are currently used on the route. Lufthansa says that once it has taken delivery of its eighth A380 at the end of May, it will operate 84 weekly long-haul services using the type, offering 44,000 weekly seats. The airline has 15 A380s on firm order.
Ryanair is introducing a €2 ($2.84) per passenger surcharge to cover the costs of flight cancellations, delays and passenger compensation that it has to provide under European Union legislation.
