He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
Lufthansa posted a €116 million net loss in 2009, as new subsidiaries Austrian Airlines, BMI and Brussels Airlines weighed down the group’s financial performance. Europe’s largest carrier posted a €130 million operating profit for the period, down from €1.3 billion a year earlier. Lufthansa said it will propose to pay no dividend to shareholders. Last year, they received 70 cents per share. Revenues dropped by 10% to €22.3 billion, and the carrier intends to reveal further financial details on March 11.
Hungarian airline Malev was re-nationalized over the weekend following an agreement between the Hungarian government and the carrier’s former owners. The state now holds 95% of the company’s shares, with 5% remaining in the hands of the former majority owner, Russian air transport group AirBridge.
Eurowings will not lay off as many pilots and cabin crew as originally planned, according to internal documents obtained by The DAILY. The Lufthansa regional affiliate plans to take over eight Avro-RJs that were to be phased out at sister company Lufthansa CityLine.
